Copilot cites the restaurant's own site, Google cites Tripadvisor

29
completed readings, the denominator for everything else
7
readings with at least one citation under the answer
22
readings that name businesses without citing any source

Read the second row against the first: only 7 answers out of 29, about one in four, say where the names come from.

Source 30 attempts on Microsoft Copilot made by us on 10 September 2026, and 30 readings of Google AI Overviews from 9 September 2026, on the same 10 questions about Costa Adeje.

On 10 September 2026 we put 10 questions about Costa Adeje to Microsoft Copilot, 5 about restaurants and 5 about estate agencies, with 3 rounds each. Out of 30 attempts we got 29 completed readings, and 1 was lost to a dropped connection.

Copilot answered all 29 times, and every time it named at least one business. Citations are a different matter. The list of links under the answer was there 7 times out of 29, while the other 22 readings, 76% of them, name businesses without saying where they come from: about three answers in four, with no source.

It is not spread evenly. On restaurants the citations are there 7 times out of 15, a little under one answer in two, and on estate agencies 0 times out of 14, even though those 14 answers named 11 different agencies.

There are 9 domains, and 4 of them we had never seen

The 7 readings with citations carry 9 distinct domains, and 5 were already in our source picture for the same 10 questions. The other 4 were not.

Of those 9 domains, 7 are the named business's own site or a page of it, and 2 are social profiles. There are no review portals or lists.

Google, on the same questions, looks somewhere else

On 9 September 2026 we had read Google AI Overviews on the same 10 questions, 3 rounds and 30 readings, and the panel had shown up 16 times. On restaurants it showed up 4 times, and Tripadvisor was in all 4.

On restaurants Google cited 7 domains, and only 1 was a restaurant's own site: the rest are portals, guides and social networks. Copilot goes to the site, Google through those who talk about it.

Between Copilot's 9 domains and Google's there is 1 in common, and it is a social network.

What this does not say

This is 10 questions over 2 categories, in one area and one afternoon. The 76% without citations is the figure of this run, not Copilot's rate. And we counted the named businesses from the formatting of the answer, not with the extractor we use in the product.

Method

  • 30 attempts on 10 questions about Costa Adeje, 3 rounds each: 29 completed readings and 1 dropped connection, which stays out of the denominator.
  • All of them on 10 September 2026, in one afternoon.
  • One assistant only, Microsoft Copilot, on the same questions already read on Google AI Overviews the day before.
