GOOGLE'S AI OVERVIEW
Before Google's results, AI now answers first.
On many searches Google puts an AI Overview at the top, a box written by AI, and people often stop right there. In the searches measured it shows up about six times in ten: when it's there, whoever it names is the first name the customer reads.
What it is, and why it matters.
The AI Overview is the box Google puts above the results, before any link. You'll recognise it by the label at the top. When it's there, it sits above everything else: if it names another practice or another agency, your name comes later, when the customer has already read.
AI Mode is something else: it's Google's chat, with its own tab, and it has its own page.
Unlike the other assistants, the AI Overview doesn't always show up. That's why the platform runs the same search several times and counts how often it's there.
It depends on what you search for.
The AI Overview doesn't show up the same way for everyone: in some categories it's almost always there, in others almost never. Here you see every question, run several times at different hours, and the sites it took the answer from.

The sites the AI Overview takes its answers from have one thing in common: a page that answers exactly the customer's question. They're often local portals and guides, sometimes a single business's page. It can be yours too. They don't say Google ignores a business. When the AI Overview isn't there, it isn't there for anyone.
The AI Overview isn't part of the number in your report, because sometimes it doesn't show up: counting it as a zero would mean measuring something that wasn't there. In Growth you'll find it separately.
It changes from one time to the next, even on the same question. That's why the same search is run several times, a few minutes apart, and what's published here is how often it's there.
The platform reads the Google page the way the person searching sees it. Failed searches don't count: in this measurement there are none.
