The first row is Rome. The third is the ceiling: across nine cities, the most named salon shows up in half the answers.

Source 119 beauty salons in nine cities, measured by Mador on 30 September 2026 on ChatGPT and Perplexity, with the same 5 questions in each city. No salon is named: they are not clients and did not ask to be here.

On 30 September 2026 Mador asked ChatGPT and Perplexity for a beauty salon in Rome, with the questions people ask when they need one: a cheap but clean one in the centre, one open on a Sunday, one that does waxing well, where to go for nails and gel polish. Of the 19 Roman salons on the list, not one was named in any of the answers.

These are not makeshift places. Each one has a working website of its own, checked one by one before the measurement. For the AI, that day, they did not exist.

It is not just Rome

The same measurement ran in nine cities: Milan, Rome, Naples, Turin, Florence, Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia and Santa Cruz de Tenerife. 119 beauty salons in all, and 106 were never named. Just under nine in ten.

In Rome and Naples the count is zero for every salon measured. In the other cities a few show up, but rarely.

The most named salon shows up half the time

In none of the nine cities does a salon appear in every answer. The most named of all is in Turin, and it shows up in 5 answers out of 10: half. In the other cities the most named one shows up 3 times at most.

So nobody has taken the spot yet. In a trade where the AI almost always answers with other names, the salon that starts showing up does not have to push anyone out.

What the assistants read

Every answer comes with the list of sites the assistant opened to write it. For Rome, 8 of the 9 answers that give that list include Treatwell, the site where treatments are booked. Fresha is often there too.

For a beauty salon today, the name the AI knows is the one written on the booking site. The salon's own website, when there is one, is rarely opened.

What cannot be said

These are 5 questions per city, two assistants and a single day. Other questions or other assistants may give other numbers. Mador built the list of salons, taking only those with a website of their own: it is a list of real businesses, not of every business in a city. And a salon that is not named may still appear on a booking site the assistant read.

What the measurement does say is plain: in Rome, on 30 September, anyone asking the AI for a beauty salon got names that were not theirs.

Method

  • 10 answers per city, 5 questions for 2 assistants: all of them came back and all of them are counted.
  • All on 30 September 2026.
  • ChatGPT and Perplexity, the same two assistants as the free scan.
